Planned Parenthood expands services for older women

Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia has expanded its services to accommodate the medical needs of menopausal and post-menopausal women in Hampton Roads.

The services now also include an evaluation for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) qualification, and HRT can be prescribed if indicated.

?Planned Parenthood often gets pigeon-holed as only a provider of birth control for younger women, but we do so much more,? said lead clinician Dede Raney. ?We want to be there for women both during and beyond their childbearing years, as it?s essential that women care for their reproductive health throughout their lives.?

Menopause is a normal stage in a woman?s life, when her ovaries slowly stop producing the hormones that cause menstrual cycles. Menopause signifies a definite change in a woman?s life and can bring a whole host of new medical situations that may need to be addressed.

In addition, during menopause women may qualify for HRT, which consists of a combination of synthetic estrogen and progesterone to control hot flashes, vaginal discomfort and other menopausal symptoms.

For more information or to make an appointment to discuss services during and after menopause, call Planned Parenthood at 499-PLAN (7526).
